Furnace Noises That Indicate a Problem
In a little while, you’re going to start relying on your furnace to keep warm. That means more strain on your system, and a greater likelihood for problems to occur. The faster you can react to any problems, the more damage you can prevent. One of the best ways to make sure that you detect a furnace problem early is to listen for strange noises coming from the system. Let’s take a look at some of the more common strange noises that indicate a problem with the furnace.
Booming
If it sounds like someone is setting off cherry bombs in your furnace every time it turns on, it’s probably because you have a clogged burner assembly. The burner assembly is the part of the gas furnace that actually ignites natural gas in order to generate heat. Over time, carbon particles that are left over from the combustion process come to rest on the burner assembly jets. These carbon deposits can eventually become bad enough that they prevent all of the jets from firing on time. When the delayed jets finally fire, they burn through the excess gas at once to generate that booming sound. Getting the burner assembly professionally cleaned is the best way to solve this problem.
Grinding
Your furnace moves air throughout your home during operation by means of a part called the air handler, which is basically a motor attached to a large fan. In order to compensate for the amount of friction put on the motor during operation, it is equipped with a series of oiled bearings. These bearings will wear down over time, causing the friction on the motor to rise and generating a loud grinding sound. If you hear this sound, call for repairs immediately. The bearings must be replaced before the motor burns out.
