Issues That Lead to Heat Pump Replacement

Heat pumps can last quite a while, provided that they’re cared for properly. All it takes is the right problem at the wrong time, though, to cause the system to break down entirely. If you’re not careful, you may find yourself replacing your heat pump years sooner than you otherwise would. Let’s take a look at a couple of the more serious problems that can lead to heat pump replacement.

Short Cycling

If your heat pump is turning on and off every few minutes, that’s called short cycling. Short cycling is often caused by either a short circuit in the system or a damaged compressor, which throws off the operating rhythm of the system. As the system constantly starts and stops, the wear and tear on it increases dramatically. This will cause parts to become worn out more quickly than they otherwise would, causing more frequent issues. If the problem isn’t fixed, the heat pump will eventually break down entirely. Have a professional look at your system if you notice it short cycling.

Refrigerant Leaks

Heat pumps rely on refrigerant entirely in order to operate. Evaporating and condensing refrigerant is how the system moves heat from one place to another. The refrigerant is not consumed by this process, but is instead recycled between liquid and gaseous states. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it will slowly drain the system of the fluid that it needs to keep functioning. This will cause a steady drop in output, followed by an eventual breakdown. If you notice a drop in output from your heating system, or see fluid dripping from it, call for repairs right away. Otherwise, you may need to replace your heat pump very soon.
