Watch for These Furnace Issues
As the weather continues to cool, it’s important that you keep an eye on your furnace. Rising demand will put more stress on the system, making it more likely for problems to occur. The faster you can catch any problems that come up, the faster you can get them repaired and the better off the system will be. Let’s take a look at some of the common furnace issues you might run into this winter.
Air Handler Failure
The air handler is the part of the furnace that circulates air throughout your home during operation. The air handler is put under a lot of stress during operation, so it contains a number of oiled bearings to help it compensate. These bearings wear down over time, causing friction on the air handler to rise. If you hear a grinding sound coming from your furnace, or notice that it isn’t blowing as much warm air as it should be, it’s an indication that the air handler is in trouble. Get it repaired as quickly as possible, before the motor burns out.
Clogged Air Filter
The air filter is a simple fiber mesh located in the air return duct of the furnace. All air that flows into the furnace passes through the air filter. The air filter is there to catch contaminants and debris that is carried through the ducts, before it has a chance to reach the furnace. If the filter isn’t cleaned often enough, though, it can become clogged. This can cause the furnace to overheat, and possibly start short cycling. If your furnace is turning off and on every couple of minutes, have a professional examine it.
