Why Won’t My Heat Pump Switch to Heating Mode?
Heat pumps are well-known for their ability to switch back and forth between heating and cooling modes. That might even be the reason why you bought yours. It is a pretty great advantage over traditional heating and air conditioning systems… when it works. If the system malfunctions and gets stuck in one mode, it can become more of a hindrance than a help. If your heat pump is stuck in air conditioning mode, have a look below to find out why.
The Reversing Valve
A heat pump can switch back and forth between heating and air conditioning modes thanks to a part called the reversing valve. This valve sits in the refrigerant line, and contains a slide that moves back and forth between two positions. Depending on the position the slide is in, the refrigerant flows one way or the other and determines the mode the system is in. The slide is controlled by an electromagnet called the solenoid.
Problems
If your heat pump is stuck in one mode, it’s almost certainly because of the reversing valve. If the slide in the valve is stuck, the valve will need to be opened to reset it and return the system to normal function. If the solenoid has lost its charge, however, the only thing that can be done is to replace it. One way or the other, though, you’re going to need a professional to take care of it for you. Stop using your heat pump and call for repairs right away if it is exhibiting this problem.
