Short Cycling

Short cycling is an issue caused by an electrical problem in the system, and manifests as the air conditioner turning itself off before it completes a full cooling cycle. Because the shutdown occurs early in the cycle, it can seem like the system is just turning itself on and off over and over again. Short cycling causes a number of problems for the air conditioner. The first is that it prevents the system from cooling very well. The second is that it increases the level of wear and tear that builds up on the air conditioner over a short period. The longer the air conditioner continues to short cycle, the more prone to developing other wear-related problems it is going to be. The longer your air conditioner short cycles, the more likely it’s going to be to live a shorter lifespan as well. Refrigerant Leaks

Refrigerant is one of the core parts of your air conditioning system. The air conditioner recycles refrigerant back and forth through the system while it’s running in order to move heat out of the home. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, the system will slowly lose its ability to cool properly. This will eventually culminate in the air conditioner breaking down entirely. You’ll need to have a technician patch the leak for you, and recharge your system with refrigerant, before it can operate properly again.

Frozen Coils

While the cause of frozen evaporator coils is pretty easy to prevent, the effects are a bit tougher. Coils usually freeze when the air filter for the air conditioner clogs, stopping the flow of hot air over the coil. This causes the temperature around the coil to drop lower and lower, until it eventually freezes over. A frozen coil is bad enough by itself, because it prevents the air conditioner from siphoning heat from the air in the home. The bigger issue, though, is that the ice can spread down the refrigerant line to other parts of the system and cause them to malfunction. You’re going to need a technician to defrost your air conditioner for you once it’s reached that point, even if you’ve already changed the filter.
