Air Conditioner Problems to Watch for This Spring

Spring is here, and summer is not far off. People are starting to rely on their air conditioners more and more often as the temperature outside starts to heat up. The more you rely on your air conditioner to keep you cool on a day to day basis, the more wear and tear you’re going to put on the system. That means that your air conditioner is far more likely to develop issues during this time of year than at any other time. Rapid response is key when it comes to protecting your system from becoming damaged by these problems. Let’s take a look at some of the signs that you need to call for AC repairs as quickly as possible.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

The evaporator coil is the part of the air conditioner that evaporates refrigerant in order to remove heat from the home’s air. During operation, the temperature around the coil drops as heat is leeched from it. Condensate forms on the coil as the air is cooled past the dew point, after which it flows into the condensate drain and out of the system. The constant flow of warm air from the ducts prevents the evaporator coil from lowering the temperature enough to freeze the condensate. If the flow of air is interrupted for whatever reason, though, the balance is disrupted and the condensate will form ice. This will cause a drop in output, and eventually the system will break down.

Refrigerant Leaks

The air conditioner relies on having a constant level of refrigerant in its system at all times. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it will drain the system of the fluid it needs to operate, causing an eventual breakdown. Call for repairs immediately if you notice any fluid dripping from your air conditioning system.
