Make Sure Your Furnace is the Right Size
There are a lot of different factors that come into play when selecting a new furnace. Some are more important than others, and some can be safely ignored outside of personal taste. Unfortunately, size is not one of those factors. If your furnace is not properly sized, it can cause you untold amounts of frustration later on, not to mention significantly higher repair and replacement costs.
If the Furnace is Too Large
It can be tempting to go with the “bigger is better” maxim when installing a new furnace. However, that’s more likely to cause problems than it is to help you. An oversized furnace will put out too much heat for the thermostat to handle. So, the system will shut down before it can complete a full heating cycle. Short cycling like this will substantially hinder the heating ability of the system, since it will not be able to complete a full cycle. It will also cause the system to wear down much faster than it normally would. The furnace will develop issues much more frequently, including breakdowns, and will have its lifespan shortened significantly.
If the Furnace is Too Small
An undersized furnace will struggle to provide enough heat to affect the designed temperature changes for the home. The system will have to operate for longer periods of time than it was designed to do, which will have the same end result as if the system were too large. The furnace will wear down faster, and will need to be replaced much sooner. If you want to get the most out of your furnace, make sure that it’s properly sized.
